Coast to Coast
Introduction
St Bees to Robin Hood's Bay
201.5 miles
A journal of our crossing between 29th April and 10th May 2005
My friend Graham Butler and I did this walk in 2005 and took twelve days over it. We also arranged that some of our regular walking pals (‘guest walkers’) would
accompany us on various stages throughout the walk in order to share some of our experiences, which were to be many. This account is not intended to be a
chronicle of the route, but more of a light hearted account of our acquaintances and those experiences that we had along the way……………..
We had planned the walk some 6 months earlier, and had pre-booked all of our accommodation with a schedule of 12 days for completion. For ease of walking, we
had decided to use the services of the Packhorse organization to transport our luggage, thus enabling us to carry just a daypack. Following much persuasion, we
were to have the company of 4 guest walkers at differing points on the walk with no overlaps, so providing us with 6 days respite from one another.
With much ignorance at the time, I planned the walk and printed the route maps using the Cicerone guidebook, and then we proceeded to follow Hannon’s guidebook
for day to day navigation. The slight differences between the two publications managed to add to our ‘fun’ along the way. Also we pride ourselves on the fact that we
have never got lost – we just get misplaced quite regularly!
Contrary to those who follow and read Wainwright, I think we started as men and finished as boys!!
