We were to be joined today by my stepbrother Phil as a guest walker, who for his sins lives locally at Saltburn. He was
dropped off by his partner Jane, and was dutifully handed the guide and map for the day’s journey. We benefited along
the way with Phil’s additional input and local knowledge.
Just as we reached Lord Stones Café it started to hail very heavily and we decided that it would be a good place to stay
for a cuppa. Continuing, the weather was very changeable, and we were caught in a few showers. The were wonderful
views along this section of the Cleveland Way and along Carlton Bank we were able to get our first views of the North
Sea beyond Teeside. We dropped down into Clay Bank and rang our host for the evening, Barbara from Newlands House in
Great Broughton, some 2½ miles away who came - by prior agreement - to collect us.
Phil returned home to join us later. Our accommodation was superb, and although we were in massive bunks, our en-
suite bathroom resembled a tardis, it was massive and quite luxurious. In the evening we met up with Phil and Jayne in
the Wainstones Hotel for dinner and a couple of beers. We were to see them again in Robin Hood’s Bay.
