The weather today started wet and drizzly, but soon improved once we got underway, with waterproofs being discarded
atop Anglers Crag, the higher level route that we had taken as a variation. Along the way today we met a further 3
‘senior’ Americans, the oldest of whom was 80 and had done the Camino de Santiago 4 times!
As none of us had been to Black Sail Hut before we did this route in preference to the High Stile and Haystacks variant.
Upon arrival at the hut it was deserted, but by the time we had made a brew others were beginning to descend upon us
– Coast to Coasters and other walkers. This influx could have had something to do with the fact that the rain had started
to fall lightly again. Will, the American we had penned as Yank, joined us for a chat and explained that Pete - Swank –
had taken the higher level route and they were planning to meet up before Honister. This was to be the last we saw of
them.
Prior to setting off again when the weater had again eased; Jay asked Mick and Hilary if he could walk to Borrowdale
with them, as his feet were still hurting and they were going slower than Graham and myself. This they agreed to, not
knowing what they were letting themselves into as Jay can talk for England!
We arrived at Borrowdale Youth Hostel, our lodgings for the night, collected our bags and found our 2 bed room was
more of a box room which required detailed planning for moving around! Following swift showers and a change of
clothing we retired to the lawn outside with a welcome beer to await the arrival of Jay, which occurred about an hour
later. After Jay showered and changed, we bid him farewell as he left in a taxi, bound for St Bees to collect his car and
return to the Midlands.
That evening we dined in the local hotel where we again met Mick and Hilary who casually mentioned that they had
been ‘engaged in conversation’ with Jay along the way (“can’t he talk”), and it transpired that Jay and Mick had a
mutual acquaintance in Nassau. It really is a small world at times.
