Coast to Coast Day 1 St Bees – Ennerdale Bridge 15.3 miles Copyright © Barry Smith 2012. All Rights Reserved. We awoke to excellent weather, and following a generous breakfast made our way down to the beach and the start of  our mission. We duly ‘dipped our feet’ and selected the obligatory stone from the shore to carry with us to Robin Hood’s  Bay, and wished each other a good journey. We were off.   Whilst this, and much photo taking was under way, we noticed two other couples also starting off. These we were later  to establish were two American lads (Yank & Swank) from Connecticut, and Mick and Hilary, ex pats from Nassau and New  York respectively.   Along a relatively easy first day’s walk, we passed another three Americans in Moor Row, and had no real problems until  we were coming off Dent where the route appeared to be slightly ambiguous. We were soon ‘back on track’ however,  and arrived in Ennerdale Bridge at 3pm with Jay complaining of blisters on both of his feet and Graham having a blister  on his heel.   Arriving at that night’s destination The Cloggers, we found the place deserted and with little sign of life – or our bags.  After 1½ hrs. wait in the garden, the owners arrived; it transpired that they had been to a funeral, and that our bags  were in the garage. We found the accommodation slightly basic but adequate. After settling in and being buoyed by a  good luck card that my wife Pam had sent ahead for me, we headed for an evening at the Shepherd’s Arms, which we  concluded was not good value for money.
